In Praise of Novelty Songs

Chuck Berry’s “My Ding-A-Ling” was his only #1 hit in the United States. And it’s awesome. There’s no funnier line than “That’s future parliament singing” because he’s absolutely right. I had a hell of a time singing it in a karaoke bar.

Likewise, I was introduced to Johnny Cash due to A Boy Named Sue, which is fantastic.

And I have a soft spot for Weird Al.

Tim Minchin’s “If I didn’t have you”  is one of my favorite songs discovered in the last few years. Sometimes, it’s important to have music that doesn’t take itself too seriously, and that’s just fun.

About Thomas Mets

I’m a comic book fan, wannabe writer, politics buff and New Yorker. I don’t actually follow baseball. In the Estonian language, “Mets” simply means forest, or lousy sports team. Currently, I’m writing a few comic books about my grandparents’ experiences in Soviet Estonia for Grayhaven comics. You can email me at mistermets@gmail.com
