Estonian Sketch Comedy

Yesterday, I was introduced to the Estonian sketch comedy series Tujurikkuja. It essentially translates to Mood Ruiner. In English, the title might be something like Killjoy.

It’s really funny stuff for anyone going through Saturday Night Live withdrawal. Most of the following videos include optional English captions for those people that can’t speak the primary language of a country with 1.3 million people, a large chunk of whom only speak Russian.

An undercover cop has to get information on arms dealers.

The reality show Estonia’s Next Neonazi attracts a few aspirants.

All right, technically “Eesti otsib neonatsi” literally translates to “Estonia searches for a Neo-Nazi” but that title’s not as catchy in English.

A farmer discovers a new way to get government funding.

Then there’s a riff on Knight Rider.

One of my favorites does not have English options available, although it should be pretty easy to understand. It’s the standard set-up to a swim meet. The best line is about a pickle being the only approved form of athletic enhancement.

About Thomas Mets

I’m a comic book fan, wannabe writer, politics buff and New Yorker. I don’t actually follow baseball. In the Estonian language, “Mets” simply means forest, or lousy sports team. Currently, I’m writing a few comic books about my grandparents’ experiences in Soviet Estonia for Grayhaven comics. You can email me at mistermets@gmail.com
