Captain Marvel

It’s old news, but an interesting report. In late April, Ron Lunz of the American Conservative considered the inherent problems with the American media.

Conor Friedersdorf of the Atlantic considered the reasons for the blind spots.

Ross Baker of the USA Today editorial board wants to offer legalization but not citizenship to those who came to the country illegally.

Lego faces have been getting increasingly grumpy.

IGN released their list of the Top 25 Superman stories, as a compliment to their lists of the Top 25 Batman Graphic Novels, the 25 best Spider-Man stories, the Top 25 Avengers Stories, the Top 25 Iron Man stories, the Top 25 X-Men stories and top 25 comic book runs of the last decade.

Glenn Beck promises a major revelation tomorrow that will shake both political parties to the core.

Describing the “whistleblower” who apparently came forward to Beck and TheBlaze, he said, “this guy is so afraid for his life” that he has said he will only tell his story on live television in front of Congress. Beck stated that the one document from the source that his team has seen would take down pretty much the whole power structure, pretty much everything.” He added, “It will take down the GOP, it will take down the Democrats, it will take down many members of Congress… the American people, you haven’t even begun to be outraged.”

Of course, the last time Beck promised a revelation that would change the course of history, it concerns the mysterious Saudi Arabian man who was questioned and released after the Boston Marathon bombings. That theory has apparently since taken a back seat to more pressing matters. If Beck does manage to “take down” the entire U.S. power structure tomorrow, we will be sure to let you know.

Tom Spurgeon praises All-Star Superman #10, possibly the best single issue of any comic book of the last twenty years.

Kanye West thinks he doesn’t get enough respect. And he may be right. There aren’t many albums I’ve enjoyed more than My Twisted Dark Fantasy. That got robbed at the Grammys.

Chris Troy of Bleeding Cool suspects that Kelly Sue Deconnick, the writer of Captain Marvel, has managed to get women into comic book stores. In a slightly related story, the parents of Mia Grace, the four year old girl with an impressive knowledge of Marvel Comics trivia, were impressed by all the potential role models for their daughter working at Marvel. Her dad was happy about it.

I have always supported Mia’s love of Super Heroes because I think that she can find some worthy female roll models in the Comic Book Universe.  Characters who show her that she can be just as capable and just as strong as any boy.  One of the things I know about this trip is something that I’m sure Mia is probably too young to understand.  I know that when Mia looks back, she will realize that this trip will have helped to shape her understanding of how successful a woman she can be.  She met so many impressive women doing impressive things that it is impossible not to have had a lasting and positive impact.  She will be able to look back and say “these women were so nice to me and so impressed by me as a child then I wonder all that I am capable of.”

A Republican congressman made a comment about rape and abortion. But he’s not as bad as Todd Akin.

City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, the frontrunner in the 2013 New York City Mayoral election, doesn’t seem to have much support in Queens.

Walter Shapiro of the Prospect suggests that anyone interested in the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination in 2016 should start trying to differentiate themselves from President Obama now.

And the comics industry seems to be doing pretty well.

About Thomas Mets

I’m a comic book fan, wannabe writer, politics buff and New Yorker. I don’t actually follow baseball. In the Estonian language, “Mets” simply means forest, or lousy sports team. You can email me at
